Introduction to College of Physics and Information Engineering

The College of Physics and Information Engineering (CPIE) originated from the Department of Physics & Wireless, one of the first five faculties at the foundation of Fuzhou University in 1958. From 1980s to 1990s, the department was separated into the Department of Information & Communication Engineering and the Department of Electronic Science & Applied Physics, which were then reunited to establish the new CPIE in 2003. Located at the campuses of Qishan, Yishan and Tongpan of Fuzhou University, the CPIE owns an infrastructure area of over 30,000 m2 and an education and research equipment value of over RMB 100 million.

The CPIE has nine undergraduate programs including Communication Engineering, Electrical & Information Engineering, Electronics Science & Technology, Photoelectric Information Engineering, Microelectronics Science & Engineering, Applied Physics, Digital Media Technology, Internet of Things Engineering, and Integrated Circuit Design & System Integration. In November 2011, the Fuzhou University – Newland Group School of IoT was founded as the very first School of Internet of Things in China, with the joint effort of the CPIE and Newland Group. The corporation has set a precedent of talent program for emerging discipline under university-enterprise collaboration. Since June 2015, the CPIE has also been devoted to the construction of one of the first state-supported exemplary schools of microelectronics, as the only optimally-supported institution in universities of Fujian Province.

The CPIE has 1 first-level discipline PhD program (the Electronics Science & Technology), 6 second-level discipline PhD programs (including Communication & Information System, Physical Electronics, Microelectronics & Solid-state Electronics, Circuits & Systems, Optoelectronic Information Technology and Intelligent Information Technology) and 2 post-doctoral programs (including Electronics Science & Technology and Information &Communication Engineering). It has 2 first-level discipline MPhil programs (including Electronics Science & Technology and Information & Communication Engineering), 8 second-level discipline MPhil programs (including Communication & Information System, Signal & Information Processing, Digital Media Technology, Physical Electronics, Microelectronics & Solid-state Electronics, Circuits & Systems, Optoelectronic Information Technology and Optics) and 2 professional master programs (including Electrical & Communication Engineering and Integrated Circuit Engineering). In particular, the CPIE has 1 state-level key program of Project 211 (Supporting Technologies for Photoelectric Information & Services), 1 province-level prime platform of innovation (Information Visualization & Processing) and 2 province-level key programs (including Electronics Science & Technology and Communication& Information Engineering).

The CPIE has a faculty number of 211, including 25 professors / research professors and 74 associate professors / associate research professors. Until now, 2 of them are supported by the state-level Thousand Talents Program (including 1 short-term experts), 1 of them is supported by the Yangtze Scholar Program of National Ministry of Education, 1 of them is supported by the state-level NSF Found for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 of them is supported by the Thousand Talents Program for Young Scholars; 1 of them has been served as associate director of the state-level Project 863 expert group, 1 of them has been served as associate director of Teaching Guidance Committee in National Universities and Colleges which is run by the National Ministry of Education, and 5 of them have been awarded special grants of Chinese government. The CPIE has 1 province-level Hundred Talents Program expert, 3 Minjiang Scholar Distinguished Professors,1 Minjiang Scholar Chair Professorand 4 Qinshan Scholars. It has 35 PhD supervisors (including guest professors), 131 MPhil supervisors. 91 faculties have been awarded with PhD degrees. Now the CPIE supports 2162 students for undergraduate programs, 376 students for master programs, 74 students for PhD programs and 184 students for half-time MEng programs.

The CPIE has 13 province or state level research platforms including National & Local United Engineering laboratory of Plat Panel Display Technology, National & Local United Engineering Center of Intelligent TV Technology, Exemplary Station of International Science & Technology Collaboration on Health & Medical Care Instruments supported by the National Ministry of Science & Technology, Engineering Research Center of Field-Emission Display Technology supported by the National Ministry of Education, Fujian Key Laboratory of Quantum Information & Optics, Fujian Development Center of Integrated Circuit, Fujian Key Laboratory of Medical Instruments & Biologic Technologies, Fujian Development Center of Photovoltaic Technology, etc. It also has 12 university-level research institutes and over 20 university-enterprise collaborated laboratories, with an average of more than 20 million research funds per year.

The CPIE promotes the full developments of students, with an annual employ rate of over 95% for all graduates, which is at the top list of colleges in Fuzhou University. The CPIE encourages students to enroll contests on innovation and business startup, with good records including 49 international prizes of 53 students, 156 national-level-and-above prizes of 314 students during 2011-2015. In 2016, two CPIE teams have obtained 2 gold prizes in the 2nd Contest of Internet+ Innovation & Business Startup of Chinese College Students, which has achieved the zero to breakthrough of both Fuzhou University and Fujian Province.

The CPIE has been serving as a cradle for innovative talent cultivation of electronics, information, communications and physics in Fujian Province. It has been endorsing the education ideology of Excellent Engineer Training with the Combination of Science & Technology. To fulfill the requirements of science, technology and national economic developments, it has been advocating to explore new research and education fields, to optimize the structures of talent cultivations and to promote scientific research developments. The CPIE is delighted to contribute on a high-level talent cultivation station for Fujian Province, West Taiwan Strait, and the future. It has been serving and will serve the development of Fuzhou University as an entrepreneurial giant in Southeast China.
